The Values Behind Our Christian Martial Arts Dojo

Here at Savior Martial Arts, our Virginia Beach dojo has been enriching lives through martial arts for over 20 years. Since Sihan Scott founded SMA back in the 1990s, we’ve instructed thousands of students and promoted hundreds of black belts who are now adults achieving great things. We even have original students returning to enroll their own children!

Our name may prompt some to wonder—just how do Christianity and martial arts mix? Our logo encapsulates the core values behind our Christ-centered approach:

The Blades Represent Excellence

The sharp blades surrounding the logo signify our premium martial arts quality. We aim for technical excellence, equipping students with real-world self defense. As Christians, we believe anything bearing God’s name should strive for utmost quality.

The Circle Symbolizes Striving Toward Christ

The swooping circle is the Japanese calligraphy Enso, representing endless pursuit of perfection only found in Christ. Through continual practice, we better align our character with Jesus’ example. Though individually imperfect, submission to God propels collective growth.

At the Core Is People

Beyond technique, SMA’s priority is cultivating people from the inside out. Students and staff treat each other with Christlike respect, grace and encouragement through life’s triumphs and trials. Faith infusion promotes mental, emotional and spiritual development at every belt level.

Our dojo welcomes all backgrounds to experience martial arts plus spiritual support. We are proudly non-denominational—Catholics, Baptists, non-affiliated, still seeking, all grow together. Students gain revelation through martial arts fellowship and practice.
